Memphis
was the capital of Egypt, before the Pharaohs
moved to Thebes. It is located near Saqqara.
Memphis remained an administrative center
throughout Egypt's history, and was still an
impressive ruin in the 12th century AD. However,
today, the historic ruins have been
"mined" for their limestone blocks and
the tourist area is only a small area of the
former city. The area around
the statuary enclosure is heavily cultivated and
settled by local farmers. However, there are
other isolated antiquities to see, including the
embalming house for the Apis Bulls.
