Maatkare Hatshepsut was the fifth Pharaoh of the Eighteenth Dynasty
of Ancient Egypt, ruling longer than any female leader
of Egypt other than Cleopatra.
She is believed to have ruled as Pharaoh from 1473 BC to 1458
BC, during the New Kingdom. Prior
to that time she ruled as Queen with her husband Tutmoses II.
She was the daughter of Thutmose I and Queen Ahmose, both of whom
were of full royal blood.
After the death of her husband, she became regent for her step
son Thutmoses III.
She is best known for her sponsorship of the expedition to the
fabulous kingdom of Punt and the construction of her beautiful
mortuary
temple at Dier El Bahri on the Luxor West Bank of the Nile. |
